radial collateral ligament of metacarpophalangeal joint ( RID2335 )
The Stener lesion of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MPJ) of the thumb is characterized by an interposition of the adductor aponeurosis between a distally avulsed ligament and its insertion into the base of the proximal phalanx.
Much rarer is an analogous injury at the fifth MPJ caused by hyperabduction of the MPJ resulting in a distal tear of the radial collateral ligament with displacement of the ligament proximal to the radial sagittal band. The little finger involved by Stener-like lesion usually is abducted and unable to adduct. This injury like a true Stener lesion requires surgical repair.
MRI of the thumb MPJ demonstrates a distal radial collateral ligament tear, and sagittal band outlined by edema (asterisks). Dorsal MR images demonstrate distal radial collateral ligament tear. The ligament which remains attached at the metacarpal head is dorsally and radially folded (arrows). [ Article ]
