Discussion

Acute complete tear of the syndemotic ligament complex (anteroinferior tibiofibular, syndemotic, posteroinferior tibiofibular, and deep transverse ligaments).
Syndesmotic ligament injuries are the second most prevalent ankle ligament injury (10-15%) and are frequently associated with eversion-type ankle fractures, particularly high fibular fractures (Maissoneuve) and rupture of the deltoid ligament.
Most of the syndesmosis sprains occur in high impact or collision sports. The presence of a syndesmosis sprain is a strong predictor of chronic ankle dysfunction. Reference article.
